Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Meet Carolyn Dew

Registered Acupuncturist and Practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Carolyn is extremely passionate about Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). She has been practicing since 2003.  Carolyn grew up in Toronto and was always interested in health and the human body which led to studying Physical and Health Education at the University of Toronto.  She soon after discovered the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine and began studies. Her love of TCM prompted her to move to Victoria, British Columbia where she lived for 12 years. Carolyn completed 4 years of TCM full-time training followed by extensive post-graduate studies with leading TCM experts in the fields of pain, sports injuries, fertility, pregnancy, and women's health.

As a Registered Acupuncturist she gained tremendous experience working in multidisciplinary and women's health clinics, served as an acupuncturist to the Navy, and co-founded Mandala Center for Health and Wellness.

The desire to be closer to family led her to move back home to the GTA in 2013.  Upon her return to Ontario she settled in Georgetown and has been working there since 2014.  In the fall of 2019 Carolyn opened her very own wellness centre with a Chinese Medicine focus.

Dew Wellness is dedicated to providing exceptional Chinese Medicine to the Halton Hills community.

She enjoys providing facial acupuncture to assist with skin rejuvenation. She employs TCM body work (Tuina, gua sha, and fire cupping) to help reduce pain and improve circulation issues.

A life-long learner, she strives to continuously upgrade her skills and enjoys researching modern technological innovations such as red-light therapy and ear acupuncture to incorporate into patient treatment plans.

Jennifer looks forward to meeting with you to discover how to provide the support you need to optimize your health.

Why Acupuncture

Why Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine?

It can help with

Pain

Acupuncture is a useful therapy for acute and chronic pain syndromes. It is a natural, time-tested, safe, and effective way to treat pain, as well as a good alternative to pain medication. The World Health Organization and National Institute for Health recognize its ability to help with back pain, whiplash, disc injury, neck pain, headaches, arthritis conditions, TMJ, tendonitis, shoulder injuries, carpal tunnel, facial pain, pelvic pain, and post-surgical pain complications, to name a few...

Sports Injuries

Acupuncture is an effective method to correct muscle imbalances within the body that can predispose it to injury and cause pain and restricted movement.  Acupuncture will decrease pain and inflammation.  It will help relax muscles, relieve muscle spasms, speed healing time by increasing blood circulation and increase the range of motion of injured joints.  It may also help improve endurance and allow for faster recovery.  Motor Point Acupuncture is an extremely effective method to correct muscle imbalances within the body that predispose it to pain, injury, and restricted movement.

Fertility

An ever increasing number of couples today are experiencing trouble conceiving. Approximately 20% of Canadian couples are challenged by fertility issues. Acupuncture and TCM have gained positive  attention for their ability to enhance fertility. Whether you are trying to conceive naturally or are using assisted reproductive techniques, acupuncture and TCM can help. Conditions that respond well to Chinese Medicine include: Unexplained Infertility, Endometriosis, PCOS, Uterine Fibroids, Menstrual Cycle Disorders, Recurrent Miscarriages, Advanced Maternal  Age, Poor Egg Quality and Male Factor.

Stress

Our bodies are hard-wired to help us react to stressful events in which our sympathetic nervous system kicks in and facilitates a "fight or flight" response.  However, when the stress is extreme, or if it lasts too long, our emotional and physical health begins to suffer.

Stress hormones elevate, blood pressure increases, and immunity becomes suppressed. Over time these symptoms worsen and can develop into anxiety, depression, fatigue, digestive problems, and tension headaches.

The calming nature of acupuncture reduces stress by releasing feel good endorphins, decreases heart rate, lowers blood pressure and relaxes the muscles. It down-regulates the nervous system quickly and safely.  Acupuncture is one of the most effective tools to move one's body into the parasympathetic, rest and restore (yin) state.

Women's Health

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine have been used for hundreds of years with excellent results to balance the hormonal system and regulate menses. Some of the conditions that respond favourably to TCM are menstrual disorders, pre-menstrual syndrome, hormonal headaches, endometriosis, fibroids, yeast and bladder infections, and breast disorders.  Hormonal imbalances leading to challenging peri-menopause and Menopausal symptoms also can be relieved...

Pregnancy

When provided by a Registered Acupuncturist with specialized training in obstetrics, acupuncture during pregnancy is safe and effective at alleviating many symptoms that can arise during this exciting time. Acupuncture helps relieve stress, improve the blood flow to the uterus, regulate digestion, and even boost your energy levels. TCM can help remedy common ailments in pregnancy like nausea, heartburn, fatigue, constipation, back pain, headaches, anxiety, restless legs, hypertension, and edema. Labour preparation leading up to your birth can also help with breech position, VBAC, and a positive labour experience.

What is TCM?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the oldest active living system of medicine still being practiced today in both Asia and here in the Western World. It was developed in China over 2000 years ago. Acupuncture is the fastest growing complimentary medicine Westerners are turning to for both prevention and treatment of disease. The foundational theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine are centred on the concepts of balance (yin and yang theory), and nature (five element theory).

TCM theory sees our health as a reflection of our surroundings and our environment and that when we are not in a state of balance either physically, mentally or spiritually, illness and disease will develop. TCM therapies include Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Tui Na Massage, as well as Diet, Exercise, and Lifestyle counselling.

The TCM approach to treatment is based on your specific group of groups of signs and symptoms, not your diagnosis. This is why Chinese medicine is unique and demonstrates one of its strengths. For the same reason, one does not need a diagnosis in order to treat symptoms- a relief for patients that are suffering but have been unable to receive a Western medicine diagnosis and therefore no successful treatment.

What to Expect

Your first acupuncture appointment will last 75 to 90 minutes. We will begin with an in-depth conversation about your current health concerns, past health history, lifestyle, goals for treatment, and any questions you may have about Chinese Medicine and the treatment process. Carolyn will formulate a Chinese Medicine Diagnosis and suggest an approach to treatment. She will then administer Acupuncture treatment making sure you are comfortable and understand what is happening during your first session.

In addition to acupuncture, your treatment may include supporting modalities such as cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, tui na (massage), and electrical needle stimulation. Acupuncture is the primary Chinese medicine modality that Carolyn uses in treatment. Try to wear comfortable clothing for your appointment, and make sure you are well hydrated and have eaten lightly before your treatment. Acupuncture needles are single use, sterile, made of surgical stainless steel, and are extremely fine. Some people feel minimal discomfort as the needles are inserted while others feel nothing at all. Once needling is complete, you will have the opportunity to rest in your serene treatment room for up to 30 minutes. Patients look forward to this opportunity to relax during an otherwise hectic day and feel refreshed afterwards.

Depending on your health condition, Carolyn may suggest a Chinese Herbal Medicine formula for you to take daily, to go alongside your Acupuncture sessions. Chinese herbal formulas can be quite useful in chronic illness, internal medicine disorders, and gynecological concerns. Some examples of Chinese herbs include: ren shen (ginseng), gan cao (licorice root) and dang gui (angelica sinesis).

Do I have any coverage? Carolyn is registered with the only governing body of Chinese Medicine in Ontario- the CTCMPAO. Many extended health plans have an allowance for acupuncture treatment, check with your provider.

What To Expect

Follow-up Visits

Follow-up treatment typically last from 45 to 60 minutes. Your return visits will begin with a conversation and physical examination, focusing primarily on progress and changes in your condition as well as new concerns.  Your individual needs determine how often, and for how long, you will need to receive treatment (typically once sometimes twice per week). As your condition improves and your symptoms are alleviated, the frequency of your treatments will be slowly be reduced to every other week, monthly or even seasonally.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments needed varies from individual to individual and depending on the condition. Typically, more acute problems will show improvement within only a few treatments whereas more chronic or longstanding illnesses will require one to two treatments for several weeks. Most often, Carolyn will ask you to commit to a minimum or four treatments to start. Drawing on the wisdom of Chinese Medicine, she will offer diet and lifestyle advice where appropriate to help you get the most out of your sessions.
